Celebrating World Environment Day

Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is celebrated by millions of people across the world. Held annually since 1972 and led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the day has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach.

According to the Lancelet Commission on pollution and health’s most recent update, pollution was responsible for 9 million pre-mature deaths in 2019. With this knowledge, World Environment Day helps to advance the protection of our natural surroundings while supporting collective action against climate change and pollution.

“Only One Earth” is the official slogan for World Environmental Day 2022 and it’s been modelled after the initial slogan created for the 1972 Stockholm Conference nearly 50 years ago.

This year, the #OnlyOneEarth campaign invites all participants to celebrate the planet through collective environmental action.

Based on details from the World Environment Day 2022 campaign, this day requires advocacy for “transformative environmental change on a global scale” with a “spotlight on climate action, nature action and pollution action while encouraging everyone, everywhere to live sustainably”.

World Environment Day is special to us mainly because of its strong history of firsts. The world’s leaders finally came together in peace to discuss the state of the planet and now, more and more people and leaders continue do to the same.

With pop culture dominating our lifestyles, we see countless celebrities embracing ways to save the planet and protect the environment. Through podcasts, environmental cleanups, legislation, and social media people every day are making a difference.

This World Environment Day, don’t be afraid to be part of the change! Volunteer for a local cleanup or with an organization that promotes sustainable activities year-round and feel free to leave us a note on the contact us page to share how you plan to make a difference!
