For those who don’t know, this is another annual global initiative (in conjunction with World Celan Up Day) that encourages people to keep our outdoor spaces clean and beautiful. Steve Jewett and Bill Willoughby are the ones we can give credit to because they noticed litter destroying the beauty of their hiking trails and wanted to do something about it. Together, they began to pick up small items like cigarette butts and candy wrappers, and eventually, they carried large bags with them to collect bigger pieces of trash. Their commitment to preserving these trails led them to establish Clean Trails, Inc., a nonprofit organization focused on trail conservation and environmental stewardship. In 2017, Steve and Bill launched the first National Cleanup Day through Clean Trails and by 2018, the number of volunteers participating in the event was 1.5 million. Volunteers collectively removed 14 million pounds of waste – an incredible feat which highlights the importance of National Cleanup Day! But the work doesn’t stop here. We and many others recognize that National Clean Up Day and much of these other events extend beyond the immediate act of cleaning up or a protest. This day, creates a sense of responsibility and connection to the environment, encouraging individuals and communities to take proactive steps in preserving our natural spaces. The bonus of participating in cleanup activities or dedicated sustainability events is that people witness their impact firsthand and are motivated to change their behavior. Rooted in the simple actions of two dedicated individuals, this day serves as a reminder that everyone can make a difference. By participating in National Cleanup Day, we contribute to a cleaner planet and inspire others to do the same. So, mark your calendars for the third Saturday of September and join the movement to keep our outdoor spaces pristine.
