From Trash to Product: How Ocean Plastic Is Finding a Second Life

Adidas x Parley: Proving the Performance Case

One of the first partnerships that made ocean plastic commercially visible was Adidas x Parley, launched in 2015 between sportswear giant Adidas and ocean conservation organization Parley for the Oceans. The collaboration intercepts marine plastic debris from coastlines in the Maldives, Dominican Republic, and Sri Lanka, and processes it into high-performance yarn that Adidas uses to make running shoes, apparel, and accessories.

The partnership uses at least 75% recycled plastic waste in Parley Ocean Plastic products, and has collectively kept thousands of tonnes of plastic from entering or remaining in the ocean. By demonstrating that ocean-recovered plastic could meet the same performance standards as virgin material, and that consumers would actively choose products made from it, the collaboration changed what the market expected from recycled content.

Bureo: Recovery That Starts with Fishermen

Bureo operates a fishing net collection program in coastal communities in Chile, working directly with local fishermen to intercept abandoned nets before they reach the ocean. The recovered netting is processed into NetPlus®, a recycled material Bureo uses to manufacture skateboards, sunglasses, and consumer goods. Bureo also licenses NetPlus® to other brands. For example, Patagonia uses it in hat brims.

Economic incentives for recovering ocean plastic are lacking, and this model addresses that issue. By paying fishing communities for collected nets and building a local supply chain around that collection, Bureo creates value at the point of recovery.

REPREVE Our Ocean: Intercepting Plastic Before It Reaches the Water

REPREVE Our Ocean®, developed by fiber manufacturer Unifi, works upstream from the ocean rather than in it. The program collects post-consumer plastic bottles from communities within 50 kilometers of coastlines that lack formal waste management systems. It captures material before it enters the water. Social enterprise OceanCycle® certifies the collected plastic, which is then cleaned, shredded, and transformed into recycled polyester resin and fiber using Unifi’s proprietary FiberPrint® traceability technology.

The resulting fiber has full chain-of-custody traceability from coastline to finished product and is used in apparel, footwear, automotive, home furnishings, and packaging. Brands like Malibu C, a clean haircare brand, use REPREVE Our Ocean in packaging and other applications.

The Oceanix™ Bucket: Creating Industrial Packaging from Ocean Waste

Most of the ocean plastic products that have garnered public attention are in the consumer goods space. But recovered ocean plastic can also perform in industrial applications.

ALPLAindustrial, the ALPLA Group brand dedicated to industrial packaging solutions, has developed the Oceanix™ bucket in collaboration with Danish recycling company Plastix. Plastix, which is accredited with RecyClass’ Recycling Process Certification, processes end-of-life fishing nets and maritime ropes collected from fishing communities and vessels into high-quality recycled polypropylene (rPP). ALPLAindustrial uses that material to manufacture buckets suitable for paints, varnishes, coatings, and building and construction products.

An independently verified life cycle assessment (LCA) found that the recycled material generates up to 94.3% fewer CO₂ emissions than comparable virgin polypropylene. The Oceanix bucket also delivers the same safety, strength, chemical resistance, and durability as similar products made from virgin plastics.

Why Traceability Is the Foundation

As ocean plastic products have multiplied, so has scrutiny of what those claims actually mean. How was the plastic collected? Was it genuinely recovered from or near the ocean, or simply collected near a coast? Who verified the chain of custody? These questions determine the credibility of a brand’s environmental claims.

Programs like OceanCycle certification, Bureo’s documented collection network, and REPREVE’s FiberPrint technology are building independent verification into the supply chain from the point of collection. The Smithsonian Ocean notes that for upcycled ocean plastic to function as a genuine conservation tool, the collection and processing infrastructure must be transparent and third-party verified.

Traceability prevents greenwashing and gives buyers the confidence to trust a claim.

Ocean Plastic and the Future of Circularity

These products demonstrate that recovery of ocean plastic can be processed into products that perform in a wide range of demanding applications, something that the circular economy has long needed. By building these supply chains, companies are proving that recovered ocean waste is one of the most powerful recycled feedstocks available, and that it’s both traceable and scalable.

The infrastructure to make this happen, made up of collection networks, certification programs, and processing partnerships, is expanding alongside the market willing to pay for what recovered plastic becomes. For anyone tracking the future of plastic circularity, that convergence of supply and demand is a hopeful sign.
