Most plastic that gets recycled never comes back the way it left. A clear PET water bottle has a reasonable chance of becoming another clear PET bottle. But things like milk jugs and yogurt tubs are made of high-density polyethylene. HDPE has historically been one of the hardest materials to recycle back into food packaging, so it typically ends up in things like pipes, lumber, crates, and pallets. The loop never closes.
HDPE is also one of the most common food-contact plastics in the world. The inability to bring it back into food-grade applications at scale has been a structural weakness in the case for circular plastic packaging, and it’s a problem the industry has spent the last several years working to solve.
