Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 and is a time to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. We often marvel at the cuisine or go crazy over the pop artists, but Hispanics and Latinos have made so many other contributions in areas like sustainability.
This month, we’ll highlight some important figures and organizations in the Hispanic/Latino community- all of which have made a difference for our planet!
Sofia Barboza: Marine Conservation Expert
Sofia has been a vocal advocate for combating marine plastic pollution. She raises awareness about the impact of plastic waste on marine ecosystems and highlights the deep connection between Hispanic culture and the ocean.
Carolina Herrera: Environmental Advocate
Herrera has played a big role in advancing policies to reduce plastic waste in Latin American countries. Her advocacy led to significant milestones, such as Antigua and Barbuda becoming the first country in the Americas to ban plastic bags in 2016. Colombia soon followed and adopted similar regulations with a tax on large plastic bags- a huge win for Herrera.
Hispanic Access Foundation: Community Engagement
Through educational initiatives and community cleanups, their programs emphasize the importance of conservation, and the role Latinos can play when taking action.
Latino Conservation Week
Celebrated annually in July, this week-long event provides a platform for Hispanic communities to engage in environmental events and activities about reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month this September – October, may we honor the community's commitment to sustainability and encourage the continued progress in the fight against plastic pollution.
