Most conversations about sustainable packaging focus on what the packaging is made from, and what happens to it after use. Both of those matter, but there’s more to consider, namely, how the packaging gets made in the first place, and how much carbon that process generates before a product ever reaches a consumer’s hands.
For plastic manufacturers, the production footprint is a significant share of total lifecycle emissions. Many are building decarbonization programs that are specific, measurable, and increasingly subject to independent verification. They’re assessing energy procurement, production equipment, raw material choices, and supplier relationships, and making some of the most consequential sustainability progress in the industry.
