Roles That Circularity Actually Needs

When most people picture jobs in plastic sustainability, they picture engineers and scientists. These roles are critical for redesigning packaging formats for compatibility with existing recycling streams, developing bio-based feedstocks, and optimizing sorting technology. However, the talent needed for the future of circularity is actually much wider than technical disciplines.

Circularity requires packaging designers who understand how their decisions affect what happens at a product’s end of life. They need to know the technical criteria that determine whether a package can be recovered in real-world collection systems. The industry also needs supply chain specialists who can source and validate traceable recycled materials while also building strong supplier relationships.

Lawyers and regulatory affairs professionals are crucial for navigating the expanding and increasingly complex landscape of regulations in multiple jurisdictions. Communications professionals can explain sustainability claims to consumers accurately and simply, a skill that’s becoming more important as scrutiny of greenwashing increases.

Circularity also needs systems thinkers who can follow a packaging decision from design through manufacturing, use, collection, sortation, and reprocessing, and understand how a choice made at the design stage can make or break recyclability at the end. This kind of integrative thinking is built through experience and training programs that connect the dots throughout the value chain.

Why Universities Haven’t Closed the Gap Yet

Traditional academic curricula are still catching up to the circular economy. Employers in this space need talent with practical knowledge of recyclability standards, hands-on experience with production equipment, and familiarity with LCA methodology and EPR compliance, which aren’t consistently embedded in university programs.

As regulations and technologies rapidly evolve, the lag between training and the demand for these skills only gets bigger. The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) has also recognized this issue. In many regions, academic institutions are playing catch-up with environmental realities, and the near-term solution is shorter, skills-based training developed in collaboration with the private sector.

Training Programs That Are Building the Pipeline

The Association of Plastic Recyclers’ (APR) Design for Recyclability training is addressing the problem head-on. The online course equips packaging designers and developers with the technical knowledge to create products that can be successfully recovered in existing recycling infrastructure, including an understanding of which material choices, label adhesives, closures, and colorants enable or disrupt recyclability in real-world sorting and reprocessing facilities. The APR Design Guide that underpins the training has also been adopted as the basis for California’s SB 343 recyclability labeling law, so designers who understand it are also building regulatory compliance knowledge alongside technical skill.

UNEP’s partnership with ARIUSA, a network of universities across Latin America and the Caribbean, is building similar capacity at the academic level by creating shorter, applied courses and micro-credentials that equip students with real-world circularity skills before they enter the workforce. The program includes engineering, communications, law, and product design, recognizing that closing the talent gap in sustainability requires interdisciplinary training.

The Role of Manufacturer-Led Investment

The most direct way for a company to address the talent shortage in its own sector is to build the training infrastructure itself. ALPLA’s new Learning and Development Hub in Iowa City, which opened in June 2026, is the first program of its kind in North America.

The Hub brings together three interconnected areas. At its core is ALPLA’s paid, three-year apprenticeship program, which gives participants competitive compensation and a fully funded degree alongside hands-on training on state-of-the-art equipment. Beyond the apprenticeship, the facility offers industry-certified technical training and leadership development for existing employees. It creates pathways for career advancement within the company as well as entry points for people new to the manufacturing sector.

The program was developed in close collaboration with ALPLA’s global team in Austria, which connects North American participants to the company’s international manufacturing expertise. The Iowa City location also puts the Hub within a regional economic ecosystem that benefits from the employment and skill development it generates. As ALPLA Regional Managing Director for North America Tasos Pourloukakis noted at the opening, “Highly skilled specialists are essential to our success. This integrated approach creates meaningful opportunities to strengthen manufacturing expertise within ALPLA and the broader industry.”

Talent Investment Can’t Wait

LinkedIn projects that by 2030, one in five jobs will lack the required green expertise, and that figure could double by 2050 without deliberate intervention. In plastics specifically, the demand for workers who can design for recyclability, operate advanced sorting and reprocessing systems, and manage circular supply chains is growing faster than those workers are being produced.

Companies and organizations are investing in training now through apprenticeships, certification programs, and university partnerships to build the workforce that the circular economy needs to function. Infrastructure, materials science, and regulatory frameworks are advancing. The missing piece, in too many places, is people who know what to do with all of it. Programs like ALPLA’s Hub, APR’s design training, and UNEP’s university partnerships are starting to fill that space.
