Plastic pollution has grown into one of the most pressing challenges of our time. The volume of plastic produced annually exceeds 460 million metric tons, yet recycling rates remain low and mismanaged waste continues to enter environments globally. The complexity of the problem demands a global solution. In August 2025, 170 countries came together to negotiate the world’s first legally binding treaty on plastic pollution covering the full lifecycle from design through disposal.
Even though that round of negotiations in Geneva ended without consensus, the momentum generated underscores that change is underway. The discussions moved us closer to a significant shift in how the world will govern plastics. These talks signal to manufacturers, recyclers, and designers that global alignment is coming, and that presents a real opportunity for innovation.
