Compostable packaging often carries a strong visual message. Leaf icons and clear labels suggest an easy environmental win. At major sports and entertainment venues, composting programs report impressive diversion rates. Headlines highlight stadiums achieving 70, 80, even 90% waste diversion. These stories are encouraging and show what is possible under the right conditions.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta became the first professional sports venue to achieve Total Resource Use and Efficiency Platinum certification by diverting more than 90% of its waste from landfills. Leaders there note that nearly everything sold at concessions is compostable. Levi’s Stadium and Michigan Stadium report similar success, diverting 70% or more of game-day waste through recycling and composting.
These achievements share a common factor. They operate in closed, highly controlled environments. Stadium operators control what materials enter the facility, how waste is sorted, and where it’s sent. Staff and volunteers guide fans toward the right bins. Compostable packaging works in these systems because infrastructure and consistent messaging align.
Outside of these controlled settings, the picture changes.
